Keep your eyes peeled this summer because Plastic Free Wollongong’s message is hitting the road!
With great thanks to all of our wonderful World Clean Up Day sponsors, Dion’s Bus Service, Illawarra Folk Festival and Lotus Health and Wellbeing, we’re excited to launch our bus advertisement campaign! All summer long you’ll be able to catch our custom designed advertisements spreading the plastic-free message from the back of buses, all up and down the Illawarra coastline.
Creatively designed by local graphic designer, Lisa Diebold, these signs encourage all people of the Illawarra to make the switch to reusable and sustainable plastic-free alternatives, in order to protect our beaches and oceans! On one side the advertisement displays the types of single-use plastics everyone should be refusing to use, such as takeaway coffee cups, polystyrene as well as plastic bags, bottles, cutlery and straws. On the other side we show recommended reusable alternatives to these everyday items, such as tote bags, metal water bottles, bamboo cutlery, metal straws and reusable coffee cups.
It’s super important to keep spreading this message over the summer period, as this is often a time when people’s single-use plastic consumption hits an all time high. Plus with plenty of tourists venturing to the Gong over the holiday period, we want everyone to know that we’re a community who cares about our beaches and oceans, and wants visitors to our city to act sustainably!
One such event that is sure to bring plenty of visitors is the Illawarra Folk Festival, held at the Bulli Showground, January 17-20.
Not only has the festival supported Plastic Free Wollongong to assist with the design and printing of the bus advertisements, but it’s been leading the way in sustainability since its inception way back in 1985. The festival is completely plastic free and has both recycling and compost bin facilities available all over the site. We’re so proud to have a local festival that is setting the sustainability standard for events across the Illawarra and Australia, proving that a plastic free Wollongong is achievable!
We love local businesses supporting our cause and want to return the favour wherever we can! In return for the support given to the Plastic Free Wollongong community, we want to help make the 2019 Illawarra Folk Festival the best one yet. There are still plenty of volunteer opportunities up for grabs within the Green Team, so let's get involved and help give back to this great community event, whilst keeping the festival sustainable! The Illawarra Folk Festival is one of the largest festivals in Australia run entirely by volunteers! So you know you’ll be joining a community who are committed to making sure every single patron, performer and volunteer has a damn good time. There’s plenty of friends to be made, skills to learn and music to get your feet tapping. So what are you waiting for? You can find out more info and apply right here!
